Iron Bowl
News - Meetings
Monday, 29 November 2010 10:05

November 22, 2010

Our program was presented by Charlie Trotman, former quarterback and broadcaster for Auburn. Charlie spoke on Iron Bowl memories and other Alabama and Auburn stories.

Charlie noted that his father, club member Bubba Trotman, played at Auburn, and that he had been an Auburn fan since childhood. He recalled watching Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley, and the 1971 Iron Bowl when both teams were nationally ranked and had national title aspirations.

Alabama won the game handily, and Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy.

Charlie recalled that the year he was being recruited there were a number of other notable southeastern high school players being recruited the same year, including Steadman Shealy, Houston Nutt, and Cris Collinsworth. Charlie said although he was recruited by both Alabama and Auburn, he chose Auburn because he could play quarterback while Alabama wanted him to switch to defensive back. During Charlie’s years at Auburn he said he had a great backfield, consisting of Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, and William Andrews, all of whom went on to have solid NFL careers.

Charlie said this year’s Iron Bowl promises to be a good one, with Auburn ranked #2 nationally, and Alabama #11. Both teams have talented quarterbacks, playmakers at wide receiver, and running backs with high yards per carry. He stated that the team that stops the run will probably win the game. Despite the fact that both offenses have scored a lot of points this year, the Iron Bowl is typically a low scoring game. Alabama clearly has the better defense, ranked #3 in the country. The main match-up in the game will be the Auburn offense against the Alabama defense, and specifically Cam Newton’s ability to run on the Alabama defense.

Asked for a prediction, Charlie said he expected Auburn to win a close game in the fourth quarter.
